Carmella Uranga wearing the Hammerhead Helmet, Paris, July 2014

This artwork revisits George Stratton’s experiences with perceptual adaptation, with a contemporary slant, exploring binocular rivalry. Our two eyes always look in the same direction and focus on the same object. But modern man will often be obliged to focus on task and environment simultaneously (eg. texting while walking down the street). The Cyclops helmet proposes a solution for multi-tasking modern-man:  a large central eye taking in a wide-angle view of the scene around, while the other eye focuses diagonally downwards on a point where hands may be occupied with a task (a book, a telephone, a tablet…).
